Ava is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, working under Dr. Arie Kaufman in the Center for Visual Computing. Her research interests are interdisciplinary, focusing on the intersection of machine learning and augmented reality/virtual reality with medical oncologic surgeries.

Rachel Deahl Kostelnik — Vice President

Rachel is a second-year PhD student in Marine Atmospheric and Sustainability Sciences, working in the Warren Lab. She is researching the impact of hypoxia on fish abundance and behavior. She is from New Jersey, where she completed her undergraduate and master's degrees at NJIT in Ecology & Evolution, looking into the potential for automated insect classification using infrared remote sensing. During her free time, she loves to write, paint, and spoil her cats. In the future, she’d love to have a career where she’s able to communicate science to the public and policy-makers and teach college students to become interested in the sciences.

Narmin Mekawy — Secretary

Narmin is a fourth-year PhD candidate in the department of Neurobiology and Behavior working in the Dubnau lab. She is studying how stress influences the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. She is a first generation Egyptian-Moroccan woman from Staten Island, New York. In her free time she likes to organize with community groups, sing and bake. Long-term goals include starting a research lab at an academic institution while contributing to the community and advancements to education and science.

Sai Ram is a second-year Ph.D. student in Computer Science, specializing in artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. His research focuses on enhancing multi-modal foundational and large language models and their practical applications in solving real-world challenges. Sai Ram is also the treasurer of the Gradmag Club, where he leverages his analytical and technical skills to manage finances efficiently. Originally from India, reading science fiction, and hiking in his free time. He aspires to pursue a career in academia or as a research scientist in the tech industry, contributing to groundbreaking advancements in AI and machine learning.

Media Director

Candice is a second-year master’s student in the MFA in Television Writing program. She recently completed the summer development internship at Killer Films. She has written and directed a proof of concept for a family sitcom. Originally from San Francisco, she moved from Washington state, where she earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees in Filmmaking and Producing. In her free time, she enjoys reading and loves long nature walks with her partner in the Hudson River Valley. She hopes to develop and create her own unique and topical series, in addition to pursuing a career in academia, where she can help others grow and express their voice and vision.

Amanda is a fourth-year PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering studying alternative fuels—hydrogen, ammonia, and natural gas—in compression-ignition engines. She loves teaching and hopes to become a professor. In her free time she reads and paints.

Ming-Wei Chou — Art Director

Ming-Wei Chou

Art Director

Ming-Wei is a fifth-year PhD candidate in the chemistry program. Her research interests include drug discovery, enzyme kinetics, and protein chemistry. She is currently working in the Boon Lab, where she studies how bacteria sense their environment and the underlying chemistry. Outside of the lab, she enjoys going to the gym, brainstorming new illustration ideas, and having small tea parties with her friends. After graduation, she aims to work as a research scientist in the pharmaceutical industry while also pursuing her dream of becoming a freelance illustrator.
